Scholarship Options for Military Kids
THANKSUSA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Since 2006, ThanksUSA has awarded more than 3,000 scholarships with a total value of nearly $10 million to military children and spouses. This year, about 500 scholarships were given. Applications are accepted each year between April 1 and May 15, and each recipient receives an award of $3,000. Children must be under age 24 and maintain a GPA of 2.0. VETERANS UNITED FOUNDATION
Veterans United Home Loans formed the Veterans United Foundation Scholarship program, which offers up to 20 biannual $2,000 scholarships. A 2.5 GPA is required. Applicants must be pursuing an associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree at an accredited college. To apply, applicants need to fill out an online application and submit an essay. Applications are available at EnhanceLives.com/scholarships during the spring and fall.
AMVETS NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS
AMVETS awards six $4,000 scholarships (with recipients receiving $1,000 over four years), and one $1,000 scholarship each year. These awards are available to children or grandchildren of Veterans, Active Duty, Guard or Reserve members. Applications are accepted from January to April and recipients are awarded on June 20. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MILITARY CHILDREN PROGRAM
Children of Guard Soldiers (as well as Active Duty and Reserve members) with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 can apply. Applicants must be planning to attend a four-year and accredited undergraduate college or university full time. The program, now in its 14th year, has provided about $12 million in financial assistance to more than 8,000 students. For 2014 to 2015, 600 of 5,000 applicants received scholarships of $2,000 each.
